According to the Scriptures"Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel... By which also ye are saved... unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:1-4)

Only One Life

Two little lines I heard one day,Traveling along life's busy way;
Bringing conviction to my heart, And from my mind would not depart;
Only one life, 'twill soon be past, Only what's done for Christ will last.

Only one life, yes only one, Soon will its fleeting hours be done;
Then, in 'that day' my Lord to meet, And stand before His Judgement seat;
Only one life,'twill soon be past, Only what's done for Christ will last.

Only one life, the still small voice, Gently pleads for a better choice
Bidding me selfish aims to leave, And to God's holy will to cleave;
Only one life, 'twill soon be past, Only what's done for Christ will last.

Only one life, a few brief years, Each with its burdens, hopes, and fears;
Each with its clays I must fulfill, living for self or in His will;
Only one life, 'twill soon be past, Only what's done for Christ will last.

When this bright world would tempt me sore, When Satan would a victory score;
When self would seek to have its way, Then help me Lord with joy to say;
Only one life, 'twill soon be past, Only what's done for Christ will last.

Give me Father, a purpose deep, In joy or sorrow Thy word to keep;
Faithful and true what e'er the strife, Pleasing Thee in my daily life;
Only one life, 'twill soon be past, Only what's done for Christ will last.

Oh let my love with fervor burn, And from the world now let me turn;
Living for Thee, and Thee alone, Bringing Thee pleasure on Thy throne;
Only one life, "twill soon be past, Only what's done for Christ will last.

Only one life, yes only one, Now let me say,"Thy will be done";
And when at last I'll hear the call, I know I'll say "twas worth it all";
Only one life,'twill soon be past, Only what's done for Christ will last.

Only one life soon to pass only one to give to him he will ask. I want nothing more than to serve my Lord. Because if not for him I would not have this life I live. Only one life I will surely give. For who else better than Jesus for which to live. He alone is worthy of all that is within myr being. Only Christ is worthy to be praised, worshiped, and glory given to his name. Praise Him Praise Him Yes I finally know only one life soon will pass and I want it for Christ it to last.

What is the CROSS? The Lord is seeking those who are willing to sacrifice their own life so that others might live. It is voluntarily embracing the way of the Lord regardless of the cost to self. It is actually Christ once again pouring out His life in and through us for others. This is the cross, a privilege deliberately chosen by us. It is not, as is often assumed, trials, afflictions, incurable diseases, loss of money, or even death of a loved one. The cross comes to you as you fulfill that specific calling for which God has apprehended you. Hardship and suffering are endured joyfully by those who are poured out for Him.

What God says in one word, one verse, mortals take many words, maybe volumes, trilogies! Hence He asks, "What manner of communications are these.....?" Our commuications ought to be after the manner of the Holy Ghost, after the order of Melchisedek.. ......let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. God help us, renuke our spirit of stupor. Amen.

When all the great plants of our cities
Have turned out their last finished work;
When our merchants have made their last bargain
And dismissed the last tired clerk.
When our banks have raked in the last dollar
And have paid out the last dividend;
When the Judge of the earth says, "Close for the night,"
And asks for a balance - What then?

When the choir has sung its last anthem,
And the preacher has said his last prayer,
When the people have heard their last sermon
And the sound has died out on the air;
When the Bible lies closed on the pulpit,
And the pews are all empty of men,
When each one stands facing his record -
And the great book is opened - What then?

When the actors have played their last drama
And the mimic has made his last Pun;
When the movies have flashed the last picture,
And the billboard displayed its last run.
When the crowds seeking pleasure have vanished
And have gone into darkness again -
And the world that rejected its Saviour,
Is asked for a reason - What then?

When the bugle’s last call sinks in silence,
And the long marching columns stand still;
When the captain has given his last orders,
And they’ve captured the last fort and hill,
When the flag has been hauled from the masthead,
And the wounded afield have checked in,
When the trumpet of ages is sounded -
And we stand up before Him - What then?

When your life friend has run to a finish,
And the last you can do is then done;
When your work here on earth is all ended,
And eternity’s issues begun.
As you think of how long God has pleaded,
Of how Christ bore your sins on the tree;
And your soul stands there naked before Him,
And the Father denies you - What then?

Greetings in the Precious Name of Jesus,

I heard this "quote/motto" when I was a teen participating in Campus Crusade for Christ while in college in the late 60's. It became my theme (and also alienated me from my family of origin as I abandoned the pursuit of earthly wealth) and has carried me through some very dark earth hours including death of children, even the murder of one who had been pursued but unprotected.

I am writing a book and would like to use both the poem and the quote, "Only one life will soon be past, only what's done for Christ will last." Phil, do you have the authority to grant such permission for the poem? If not, do you know who might? Thank you.

Warm regards,
Shari

yes, the Author is definitely Charles T Studd. As I turn 50 nthis year, i want this to be my motto. Not that it has not been, but this is the focus, "Only one life, 'twill soon pass; only what's done for Christ shall last. To His name be the glory! Amen!

Sherry, I think the motto line (which you quote) may have been from C.T. Studd, but the poem itself is said to have been written by P H Harding. (See other comments.)
