According to the Scriptures"Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel... By which also ye are saved... unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:1-4)

Ruined Cities

“And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me; Then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins. And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat. And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcases upon the carcases of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you. And I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation(Leviticus 26:27-31).

The Lord told Israel that if they would walk contrary to Him He would walk contrary to them and would make their cities waste and destroy their high places. There is a principle in the Scriptures that if a people or nation departs from the knowledge of God they will eventually be destroyed unless they repent. “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18). This applies to all nations, not just the people of God.

“Hear the word of the LORD… for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land … My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children” (Hosea 4:1, 6).

One of the great mysteries behind the Mayan and Aztec nations is the reason for the fall of their kingdoms and the ruin of their great cities and pyramids. When Europeans came to Mexico, many of their cities and pyramids were found desolate and buried under the jungle.

By the time Stephens wrote his “Incidents of Travel in Yucatan” in 1841, he stated, “we have discovered the crumbling remains of forty-four ancient cities… all were lost, buried, and unknown, never before visited by a stranger, and some of them, perhaps, never looked upon by the eyes of a white man.” (Incidents of Travel in the Yucatan, Vol. Two, p.306-307)

“I have cut off the nations: their towers are desolate; I made their streets waste, that none passeth by: their cities are destroyed, so that there is no man, that there is none inhabitant” (Zephaniah 3:6).

If the Egyptian, Assyrian, Phoenician, Chaldean, Persian, Grecian, Roman, German, British, and an hundred other empires fell because they left off to follow their Creator, surely the Incan, Mayan, and Aztec nations who had long before forgotten the One True God of Creation and His Laws, would not escape the same destruction.

“And I will cut off the cities of thy land, and throw down all thy strong holds: And I will cut off witchcrafts out of thine hand; and thou shalt have no more soothsayers: Thy graven images also will I cut off, and thy standing images out of the midst of thee; and thou shalt no more worship the work of thine hands. And I will pluck up thy groves out of the midst of thee: so will I destroy thy cities. And I will execute vengeance in anger and fury upon the heathen, such as they have not heard” (Micah 5:11-15).

“Behold the land of the Chaldeans; this people was not, till the Assyrian founded it for them that dwell in the wilderness: they set up the towers thereof, they raised up the palaces thereof; and [the Lord] brought it to ruin (Isaiah 23:13).

The Edomites had turned from God, and the Lord told them, “I will lay thy cities waste, and thou shalt be desolate, and thou shalt know that I am the LORD… I will make thee perpetual desolations, and thy cities shall not return: and ye shall know that I am the LORD” (Ezekiel 35:4, 9).

The conclusion of the whole matter is that any nation who forgets God and turns from His Holy Laws, they will eventually move into decadence and depravity and ultimately self-destruct. The Lord tells us, “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God” (Psalm 9:17). Such is the awful picture spoken to us through the prophet Ezekiel, who saw the forefathers “of the famous nations”, Egypt, Asshur, Elam, Meshech, Tubal, Edom and Zidon, now in hell, awaiting judgment by their Creator whom they rejected (Ezekiel 32:17-32).

These nations (Gentiles) were formed at Babel when they chose to rebel against the will of God. He confused their language and scattered them upon the face of all the earth, leaving them, “to walk in their own ways” (Acts 14:16). Paul tells us, “And the times of this ignorance God winked at” (Acts 17:30). He overlooked their folly and left them to their selves. They may have thought themselves to be wise, but they “became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart were darkened” (Romans 1:21, 22).

The apostle Paul told the church at Ephesus, “This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness” (Ephesians 4:17-19).
